ALVARO NOBOA`S BIENNIAL OF PAINTING
IN THE ALVARO NOBOA BIENNIAL AMERICAN PAINTER , KATE VRIJMOET WON THE THIRD PRIZE .
Ecuador , Cuba and the United States were the three countries which scored in top places at the second edition of the Guayaquil painting Biennial , going this year under the name of Alvaro Noboa and which opened last Wednesday at the Luis A. Noboa Naranjo Museum located at the condor insurance Building in Cordova and P.Icaza Streets.
Juan Caguana from Ecuador , obtained first place receiving a Diploma and a $20.000 ,00 Dollar check for a painting called “Picnic” done in acrylic and oil on canvas. Saidel Brito from Cuba ,received his Diploma and $10.000,00 Dollar check for a second place acrylic on canvas painting named “Surrender” .
Kate Vrijmoet from U.S.A obtained a Diploma and a $ 5,000.00 dollar check Latex paint on canvas earned her a third place position for a painting called “Shotgun Accident”.
Among those members of the jury awarding prizes were : Mariela Garcia , Larissa Marangoni and Theo constante from Ecuador and Joseph Roberts from U.S.A Alejandra Rossetti from Argentina failed to attend the opening.
Likewise, Entepreneur Alvaro Noboa delivered first prize. In his spech he mentioned that “The paintings shown here teach us about such universal subjects as love,tenderness , hope and violence as inescapable realities on earth”.
According to Pablo Martinez , the Biennial Director , Ecuador, Cuba and the U.S , were awarded top prizes because the jury found the paintings “Original and steeped in superlative technique”.
Joseph Roberts , a member of the jury, pointed out that all three winning proposals share a very particular aspect which is that “Each one poses a question with no answer found within itself which impels the spectator to reexamine the painting over and over again” .
Honourable mention was awarded to ecuadorians William Martinez , Luis Alfonso Montufar and Jose Luis Choez as well as Alberto Gallingani from Italy and Juan Conte from Uruguay.
